Framing your photo and shooting groups

See if there is a natural frame to your photo. Look for ways to use the landscape to help you set up your photos. Often we shoot people gathered around a dining room table. The result usually is that those far away from the camera are dark and those close to the camera are over exposed (too light). Those far away from the camera are too small and those in close over power the photo. So think of different ways you can organize a group.

Rule of Thirds - Don't center your image

It is more pleasing the eye if your image is not perfectly centered. The rule of thirds says to put the point of interest one third from the edge of the and one third from the top or bottom. So don't center a horizon or put an object smack in the middle with alot of exposed background (this is not true if you are filling the frame completely with the image).

Lighting, take lots of photos and change your settings (icons)

Often we set the camera to automatic and the flash goes off. But this can be a very harsh light. Look for ways to use natural light. Be careful of how shadows fall and don't be afraid to reposition your subject if you can. Side lighting is very flattering (light falling on your image from the side) and is easy to do by placing someone by a window with the light falling sideways on them...Also, by avoiding flash you will reduce the amount of red eye in your photos! I have to take a lot of pictures to get ones I like. Also, the more you take the more chance you have of getting a unique photo, especially at an event where you have no control over your subject. The soccer picture is an example of just following the game and taking a hundred photos. Don't forget to delete the ones you don't like! All those settings on your camera give you different effects. Here are some of the standard ones: Person's face - use this to take portraits. Landscape. Flower - use this for any close up shot. It gives you a very narrow range of focus.Person doing sports - use this for any thing where you want stop action, to freeze motion. Sports, a child in motion, a water droplet. Night landscape - for taking photos at night.
